About 5 pm on September 30th, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck just offshore of the town of Padang in Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake toppled buildings and started many landslides, smashing homes and swallowing up entire villages. 1115 people are known to have died, an additional 3000 have been injured. It is now confirmed that at least 147 people have died. Many buildings have collapsed and several areas are without power. A ’state of catastrophe’ has been declared after what was the most destructive quake in fifty years. Countries in the Pacific Rim are on tsunami alert – warning sirens are sounding in Hawaii, while Samoa has evacuated its coast.

Seven months after Haiti’s devastating earthquake only a fraction of the huge volume of rubble generated has been cleared, but the issue is certainly nothing new. In February, Haiti’s president Rene Preval predicted it would take “a thousand trucks moving rubble for a thousand days” to clear all the debris out of the capital. Some 1.5 million people are still living in makeshift camps despite tens of millions of dollars in aid pouring into the island-nation. It has been six months since Haiti was hit by a massive earthquake, prompting an international response which saw billions of dollars pledged for aid and rebuilding. The Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC) was established more than three months ago as the oversight body to ensure aid money is spent effectively, but reconstruction work has yet to start. So far, the only project the IHRC has approved is a m request in June, leaving Haitians wondering what is taking it so long to get the job done. Sebastian Walker reports from Port-au-Prince.
