About 5 pm on September 30th, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck just offshore of the town of Padang in Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake toppled buildings and started many landslides, smashing homes and swallowing up entire villages. 1115 people are known to have died, an additional 3000 have been injured. More than 700 Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staff are working to provide emergency medical care to earthquake survivors in and around Port-au-Prince. Surgical priorities are amputations and caesarean sections. Experienced staff say they have never seen so many severe injuries.
